Hi Steve, I am a huge fan of your "CHORD KHANCEPTS" book. I am wondering if your choice of guide-tone fingerings with first and fourth fingers to cover two-fret distances, and first and third for one-fret differences is deliberate for some reason, or simply what comes naturally to you. I can't tell if it might be easier to add a melody note, or to flesh out chords that way. My natural tendency is to use first and third, and first and second, but there is still time to change before I become overcommitted to those fingerings! I worked a fair amount on chord voicings and movement on the top 4 strings, but now I realize that I have not spent enough time on the guide tones.

Greetings Steve. Are you aware that Steve Marcus' "SOMETIME OTHER THAN NOW" - featuring you, Don Grolnick, Will Lee and Steve Gadd - will be released late January, 2018 in Japan? This CD will be one of 30 titles from the Flying Dutchman catalog that will be released as part of the "Flying Dutchman Low-Priced Reissue Series." I have it pre-ordered! Looking forward. Hope all is well with you.

Steve, I love your web site, and I love your music. After 40 years of basically playing blues, in my early retirement I've gone to the proverbial woodshed to study the music I really love, jazz. Which led me to your site. Though almost all of your analyses are over my head, I have to say how much I really appreciate what you are giving back to the jazz learning community in your work. The analyses are beautifully rendered, both in the content and in your style of explaining it all. For me, it's like a glimpse into the inner workings of genius in all of its beautiful jazz manifestations. Your work is truly inspiring. And it gives me great joy even though, as I said, most of it is beyond my comprehension in this lifetime. Keep up the inspiring work. And thank you!

Steve, with the nominees announced for the 60th Grammys in the "LATIN JAZZ" category, I was again upset to see that "BACKLOG" was not included. But then, also ignored were albums by Eddie Palmieri, Oscar Hernández, Charlie Sepulveda, and Arturo O'Farrill w/ Chucho Valdes. Of the 5 nominees, only Jane Bunnett's album actually features the sounds of real Latin percussion. What were the academy voters thinking? Never going to understand this. To repeat myself, those who heard your album know that it was, without question, one of the 5 best Latin Jazz recordings of this year, or any year. ¡Pa'lante siempre!

Hey Steve, I happened upon your site recently, although I've listened to you play on different recordings for years. Love the transcriptions, especially the analyses. I was floored by the Clare Fischer examples and wanted to hear more from Cal Tjader's "HERE AND THERE." Thanks again for the great stuff on your site.

Hi Steve, Long time fan. But I've never had the opportunity to see you perform live. I don't see a "Tour Dates" section on your web site. Where can I find out about your performances? I'm in NYC a lot and live in California. BTW, love the site, and the material you write for it. I'm also a huge fan of Folon, who I discovered around the time I discovered your music, in the late '70s. Keep up the amazing work! Seth

Hello Mr. Khan. As I write this, I am visiting an old friend... the album, "VELVET DARKNESS" by Allan Holdsworth. You've related to me in the past, how you loaned Allan the acoustic guitar that he plays on that album (the highlights for me), and how you never got even a "Thank you!"
Of course, I cannot speak for Allan, but I would like to say a big "THANK YOU" for the loan! After all these years, those acoustic tracks are just the most sensitive and beautiful playing. They meant a great deal to me when I first heard them all those years ago, and they hold up for me to this day. So, for what it's worth... thanks for putting that guitar in his hands. It made for some pretty remarkable and memorable music for me, and I'm sure many others.

Hey Steve: Your two recent posts at KHAN'S KORNER 1 of Michael Brecker's solos on both "Nile Crescent" and "Demonette" from Neil Larsen's "HIGH GEAR" album are just incredible. What a treasure Mike was, and to have these solos of his for listening and study is such a great gift for all his fans - and yours as well. Your website is the absolute best musician site on the web. Don't ever stop sharing these kinds of posts with us. Tusen takk!!!

Steve, I just saw the nominees announced for the 18th Latin Grammys in the now labeled "JAZZ" category, and was upset to see that "BACKLOG" was not there. What were the voters, the members thinking? I will never understand these things. Just remember, there is no doubt for those who heard your album that, it was, without question, one of the 5 best Latin Jazz recordings of this year, or any year. ¡Vaya!

Thanks for all your music. You were sitting in the orchestra of my life since I ran away from home in 1977. I had an old cassette that I took with me with some of your songs, so I had jazz music in Puerto Rico. I am so glad that now, with just a click, let you know that your music was in my thoughts while surfing perfect tropical waves. What a soundtrack I had for my life. Forever a fan - Brock

Dear Steve, I've been listening to "BACKLOG," and wanted to congratulate on a sensational album. This is your warmest, most emotive and expressive creation. You have come so far as an artist. Back in the '70s, when we briefly met at a gig at the Roxy, you were so gracious with your time - you were at that moment creating at a very high level - now, doing this nearly 40 years later. Awesome! An inspiration to us all. Thank you for the fun, Chuck

Greetings Steve, I am revisiting your Columbia albums on the BGO Records 2-disc set, and I'm enjoying them very much. These tunes really take me back to the days in the early '80s when I was first getting into jazz and fusion. I used to listen to the "BEST OF STEVE KHAN" LP in those days. BGO did a great job on the re-issue, and I found the liner notes very informative, because I didn't know much about your early career with the exception of your association with Steely Dan. I am looking forward to picking-up your other BGO set as well. Thanks for all of the fine music you've created over the years!

Steve: I like the new release "BACKLOG" as well as "SUBTEXT" plus your older recordings that I have in my collection like "TIGHTROPE"; "ARROWS"; "THE BLUE MAN," etc. I heard the interview today on WBGO, as well as the last time you were interviewed there. Will you ever perform again live in NYC? It would be cool to see you perform live. All the best, and good luck with the release of "BACKLOG."

Hey Steve, "BACKLOG" Love it! just got it today, I wrote to you about "Folon" some years ago, you might remember? Anyway, the recording is terrific, and a nice surprise... "Emily," beautiful arrangement & inclusion. Funny, I just watched the film a few nights ago with my wife, thinking about Coburn & Garner. I hope this note finds you & yours well. Regards, Phillip

I've heard a couple of songs off "BACKLOG" on local radio, and I'm very interested in getting this album.....however, I'm a vinyl guy. Any plans on releasing "BACKLOG" on vinyl?! I also work at a local record store, and I try to get our Jazz customers interested in your back catalog - especially "TIGHTROPE." Thanks in advance.

Hi Steve. Thanks for sharing the transcription of Monk's "Little Rootie Tootie" solo, and your comments about it! I am working to figure out how to play a stride piano version of the song, and I have really been helped along both by your transcription and analysis. :-)

Hey Steve, I know it's been a long time since I last said, "Hi!" but life gets crazy. I've been listening to "GOT MY MENTAL" again lately, and just wanted to reach out. Hello Steve, Just finished listening to "BACKLOG" that I received today (ordered online). I don't know of many musicians who make records like this, I'm telling you! Really swinging, there is a lot of sophistication to your music, but also tons of joy, groove and intricate harmonies and melodies, and a relationship to Latin music that is getting deeper and deeper while still keeping that NYC vibe that I guess is in your blood. I think there is even more space with Mark Walker, who finds the perfect balance to fit in with the percussion.
